Our client is a leading consulting engineering firm, providing thoughtful engineering design that is technologically forward thinking, innovative, and environmentally conscious.

Job Summary

The Design Engineer will work on a variety of projects focusing on project design and delivery. They will interact with clients, contractors, architects, and other project team members and are involved in the design process with a strong emphasis on safety, innovation, and sustainability. This position requires a self-motivated individual with strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Strong initiative and follow-through are essential.

Core Responsibilities

  • Work closely with senior engineers and project managers through the mechanical design and construction administration process.
  • Perform a wide array of design functions within the mechanical-HVAC and process piping disciplines, including equipment selections, system sizing, load calculations, product and material specifications, and design layouts for mechanical and process piping systems. Projects will vary from base build house systems to "fit-up" or "tool hookup" projects.
  • Lead equipment hookup "tool installation" design, including the layout of toolsets, mechanical and piping utility design, and creation of specialized drawings such as airflow diagrams, process flow diagrams, and P&IDs.
  • Conceptualize and optimize layouts of tool(s) and supporting infrastructure with multiple options as may be desired by Client.
  • Field survey of existing MEP systems to ensure accurate and optimized solutions for clients.
  • Process piping designs will typically include house utilities such as compressed air, nitrogen, process cooling water, and vacuum. Occasionally more complex process utilities such as toxic gases, cryogenic or other liquid chemical distribution, high-purity water systems, wastewater systems, air scrubbers, and gas life safety systems will be required to be designed.
  • Process mechanical design inclusive of industrial ventilation, exhaust systems, and laboratory HVAC.
  • Coordinate electrical requirements for toolset and lab with electrical engineers.
  • May include coordination and supervision of the structural engineering design by outside consultants.
  • May include assisting with the Permitting process and attendance at Fire/Hazmat inspections in field.
  • Prepare construction drawings and specifications utilizing AutoCAD, Revit, and MS Office Suite.
  • Participate in the process piping / plumbing committee to continuously improve internal standards for piping systems and associated control components.
  • Assist with EH&S code compliance analysis, calculations and reports. This may include laboratory chemical classification and inventory calculations based on SDS, IDLH & LEL calculations and participation in process hazard analyses.
  • Conduct analyses to develop feasibility studies, and basis of design options and recommendations.
  • Propose innovative solutions to design issues.
  • Coordinate project scope, design, and deadlines with project managers/senior engineers.
  • Perform submittal and shop drawing reviews and ensure timely response to RFI's.
  • Conduct construction site reviews, prepare feasibility studies, and basis of design reports.
  • Manage tasks as required to ensure work is completed on time and budget.
  • Ensure that designs are compliant with Building/Energy Codes and LEED standards. For projects utilizing Hazardous Materials, project-specific research and documentation of current codes and standards is required.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering

* 2-4-years experience as a Designer or other related role working at a consulting engineering firm or design-build contractor

* Proficiency in Trace 700, Revit, BIM 360, Energy Pro, CBECC.com required

* Knowledge of state and local Building Codes required

* LEED Accreditation preferred

* P.E., Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification, or C.I.H. preferred

* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and other engineering analysis and compliance software tools

* Experience with Equipment Hookup Design within Advanced Technology, Green Technology, BioTech/Pharmaceutical, or similar technical market sectors such as Industrial, Healthcare, or Higher Education

* Experience with mechanical / process piping design for fluids that are hazardous in nature.

* Knowledgeable of building, energy, fire, life safety, process piping, industrial ventilation standards and codes, and construction/engineering processes

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills

* Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment with multiple project deadlines

* Proclivity for catching the error and enacting appropriate changes
